ABOUT

Who We Are

The Institute for Social and Economic Progress (ISEP) is an independent institute dedicated to transforming the lives of Palestinians, and others in the region, socially, politically, and economically. ISEP conducts cutting-edge social science research that incorporates novel experimental designs and public opinion polls to produce innovative insights which inform civil society actors and policymakers on how to solve problems more effectively.

The Challenge

There is a serious shortage of applied social science research in Palestine today. Current research relies too heavily on classical frameworks which involve very little experimental research. Current research also narrowly focuses on national politics, with little granularity to provide in-depth understanding of the current social, political, and economic realities. Furthermore, current research is unable to generate actionable insights which can be used to inform policy recommendations, developmental programs, or calls to action. This leaves civil society (grassroots organizations, media, etc.), institutions (universities, religious organizations, etc.), and policymakers in the dark on the perceptions and priorities of the public. Without this understanding of the general population in Palestine, change cannot be effectively achieved.

Our Purpose

We believe that improving applied social science research in Palestine, and the wider region, will have transformative policy implications that will produce more engaged citizens, improve governance, and build civic peace.

If we show how social, economic, and political change is possible, debunk collective illusions, and formulate a vision for the future, a new horizon with endless possibilities will be unlocked.

To achieve this, ISEP experts design and lead applied social science research projects with tangible policy implications. ISEP experts will use this research to develop actionable policy and strategic planning recommendations to improve society. In addition, ISEP experts will train young researchers in applied social science to help build up capacity in higher education in Palestine. ISEP will build upon current research in Palestine by (1) leveraging contemporary academic and emerging theoretical and experimental frameworks for exciting new research projects, and (2) going beyond national politics to explore the makeup and drivers of social, economic, and political behavior.
